Product & General

What is Conteur?

An all-in-one AI writing studio for long-form fiction — world-building, character development, outlining, drafting, editing, and exporting your finished book, all in one app.

How is Conteur different from other AI writing tools?

Most tools do one piece of the process. Conteur keeps a persistent memory of your world, characters, and voice across the entire workflow, so you're not juggling separate apps for outlining, writing, editing, and formatting.

Does Conteur write my book for me?

No. Conteur assists — it helps you build, draft, and refine — but the story and the authorship remain yours.

Do I own what I write in Conteur?

Yes. What you create is yours. None of your work will ever be shared with anyone, including us. You save your stories on your own local drive.

Is my writing private?

With the free local model, your writing never leaves your computer.

Does Conteur work offline?

Yes — the free tier runs on a local model and doesn't require an internet connection.

What platforms does Conteur run on?

At this time, Conteur is only available for Windows-based computers.

What can I export my finished book as?

EPUB, PDF, and Word (.docx).

Pricing & Credits

What are Star Credits & Top-Off Credits?

The metered currency for cloud AI features in Conteur — a monthly allowance plus any extra “top-off” credits you've purchased. It's important to note that Top-Off Credits are only available for purchase while a subscription tier is active.

Is there a free plan?

Yes — the free tier includes the local AI model at no cost and never consumes Star Credits.

Do unused credits roll over?

Star Credits expire at the next renewal period. Top-Off Credits never expire, so long as you have an account — even if your plan changes to free.

Upgrading & Downgrading

How does upgrading work?

Two ways: buy an upgrade directly and get access immediately (with prorated credit for unused time on your current plan applied to the new price), or schedule a plan change in Settings, which takes effect — at no charge today — on your next renewal.

What's the upgrade discount policy?

If you upgrade mid-cycle, you get credit for the time remaining on your current plan, applied toward the new plan's price. The credit shrinks the closer you are to your renewal date — upgrading right before renewal gives little to no discount, since you're about to start a fresh cycle anyway.

How does downgrading work?

Scheduled through Settings — the lower tier takes effect at your existing renewal date, not immediately.

Cancellation

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes.

What happens if I cancel a monthly plan?

Choose “Finish the Month” (keep access until period end, no refund) or, if eligible, “Cancel Immediately” (access ends now, with an automatic refund if you qualify).

What happens if I cancel an annual plan?

Eligible customers can choose “Finish My Term,” “Pause Plan,” or “Cancel Immediately” (with an automatic refund if you qualify). Customers outside the refund window can finish the term or pause, but not cancel immediately.

Can I pause my subscription instead of canceling?

Yes — pausing stops billing and banks your remaining paid time. Resuming restores your plan and pushes your next billing date out by the length of the pause.

Refunds

What's Conteur's refund policy?

Refund requests are eligible within a limited window after purchase. For monthly plans, the request must be made no more than 7 days after purchase, and/or while you're below a usage threshold of 100 Star Credits. For annual plans, the request must be made no later than one monthly period after purchase; at that time, your balance minus one period at the standard monthly rate for your tier will be returned.

How much do I get refunded?

Monthly plans refund the amount you actually paid. Annual plans refund your order total minus one standard month's price at your tier, since you're keeping that month's value.

How long does a refund take to process?

Refunds go through a brief clearance step to confirm the original payment fully cleared before being issued — expect a short delay, not an instant refund.

What happens to my Star Credits if I get a refund?

Your paid-plan credits are removed, but Top-Off Credits you separately purchased are preserved.

Additional Questions

Can I switch between the free local model and a paid cloud model whenever I want?

Yes. You may upgrade to any tier at any time. If you choose to downgrade to a lower tier or the free tier, you'll finish the month you already paid for, unless you qualify for a refund. If you qualify for a refund, your plan is downgraded immediately once the refund is processed.

Will my story data be lost if I cancel or downgrade?

No. Your stories are saved to your local drive and are yours forever. Downgrading or canceling has no impact on your files. One caveat: if you uninstall Conteur from your computer, you'll be given a choice — keep all your story files (the uninstall process won't touch them), or delete your story files during uninstall, in which case they're gone for good unless you saved a backup.

Can I import an existing manuscript into Conteur?

Yes. In the left sidebar near the top, go to the New Story section and click Import. A file browser will appear — select the file you want and hit Enter. The file is processed into the Chapter Manager, split into chapters based on your uploaded work, and saved into Story Memory. Be sure to verify the chapter breaks are correct: in nearly all cases Conteur recognizes existing chapters and titles correctly, but it can occasionally break up front or back matter into chapters. Chapters in the Chapter Manager are easy to edit if that happens.

How do I move my stories to a different computer?

There are two ways, depending on how you want to receive them. For a Word or PDF copy, go to the Stories section at the top of the left sidebar, select your story from the list, then click Export. To transfer the story file to another Conteur installation, go to Story Memory File in the left sidebar, select the story you want, then click Copy Story Memory — or Copy Story Directory if you want everything copied.

How do I transfer my story files into the app from another Conteur app?

Go to Story Memory File and click Install Memory File or Install Directory, depending on your needs. A file browser will appear — select the file location and hit Select Folder. The story or directory will be installed onto your selected drive.

How do I contact support if something goes wrong?

Two ways: use the customer support button at the bottom of the Plans & Credits menu to send our team a message, with a screenshot if you'd like to include one — or visit the Contact page at conteur.app and send us a message there. Either way, we read and address every issue as quickly as we can.

Is there a word-count or story-length limit?

Your story length is only limited by your imagination. If you run out of credits before your story is finished, you can keep going with the free built-in AI, or add more credits with a Top-Off purchase. One caveat: very long stories can mean slower processing on certain functions and tools, since there's simply more story to scan and cross-check details against.
