Your work stays yours Your stories, characters and drafts are stored on your own computer. Nothing leaves your machine unless you deliberately choose an online feature.
An AI that lives on your desk Conteur installs its own local AI model. It works without an internet connection and without spending Star Credits.

What happens when you install

Four steps. The whole thing is finished in about fifteen minutes on a normal connection.

STEP 1 Download the file above and open it. Windows will not ask for an administrator password — Conteur installs to your own user account.
STEP 2 Read the licence agreement, confirm where you want Conteur installed, and start the installation. It takes a couple of minutes.
STEP 3 The first time you open Conteur, it downloads its local AI model — about 4.7 GB. This happens once. Leave it running until it finishes.
STEP 4 Choose where your writing should be kept, create your profile, and start your first story.
About that 4.7 GB download
That is Conteur's local AI model, and it is what lets the program write with you without an internet connection. It downloads once, on first launch. If you are on a metered or mobile connection, wait until you are on unmetered wi-fi before opening Conteur for the first time.

Windows will show you a warning. This is expected.

Conteur is a new program from an independent developer. Windows SmartScreen shows a blue warning for any program it has not seen many times before, and it will show one for Conteur.

To continue: click More info on the warning, then click Run anyway.

This warning is about reputation, not about anything found in the file. It will stop appearing as Conteur becomes more widely installed. Only download Conteur from this page.

The first time a link on this website opens Conteur, Windows may also ask whether to allow a script to run. That script is Conteur's own launcher. Allow it, and Windows will not ask again.

Updates arrive inside Conteur

You will not need to come back to this page for new versions. Conteur checks for updates itself and tells you when one is ready.

Every update is cryptographically signed and verified before it is applied, and Conteur creates a restore point first — so an update that goes wrong can be undone without touching your writing.

Your work is never part of an update. Stories, characters, Story Memory and settings are left exactly where they are.

If you ever remove Conteur

Uninstalling asks you a straight question: keep your writing, or remove everything?

If you choose to keep it, your stories, profiles and settings stay on your computer — and if you install Conteur again later, it picks them up exactly where you left off. Your writing does not disappear because a program was uninstalled.

If you choose to remove everything, Conteur removes everything, and tells you plainly if anything could not be removed.
